Hair Care ~ Beauty & Wellness

n the summer days hair care is important.  So lets talk about one of the main issues I come across; that is BRAIDS and RELAXERS! The best protective style for the summer heat and vacation time are individual braids and braided hair styles.  But the issue I'm constantly seeing is clients requesting relaxers or actually relaxing their hair prior to  getting braids.  THAT IS A MAJOR NO!!!!  Often, applying relaxers can over time weaken hair strands. The tension applied during the braiding process can aid in causing hair loss around your edges. Remember: your edges are the most sensitive section of hair on your scalp.  Honestly, your braider should be able to catch all of your hair which leaves no reason to need a relaxer.   Also be careful choosing a braider! Make sure they are knowledgeable about hair textures and tension!!

    It always seems to be a struggle for women of color, to find brands that cater to all of their skin tone needs. Cosmetic companies have come a long way and expanding their lines with various foundation shades for black and brown women, but for some odd reason, many women still have yet to determine the brands that best suit their needs. However, the following brands are high up on my list, when it comes to shade range and quality;

Milani- The entire line is created for black and brown women.

Black Opal- The entire line created for black and brown women. The brand can be found at select Wal-Mart stores, Walgreen's, and Target stores.

Iman Cosmetics- This brand can be found at select Walgreen's stores.

Fashion Fair- This brand can be found at select Macy's and Dillard's stores.

Makeup Forever-Thier HD Foundations can be purchased at Sephora stores, and online at MakeupForever.com.

Cover FX- Their Natural Finish Foundations can be purchased at Sephora stores and online at CoverFX.com.

Armani- Their Designer Fabric foundations can be purchased at Sephora stores, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus stores and online at GiorgioArmaniBeauty-USA.com.

ne of the most important steps prior to makeup application, and the key to flawless makeup, is skincare! I get so many questions asking how to achieve those "airbrushed" makeup looks without spending hundreds of dollars on a great airbrush machine.  My honest answer is that your skin MUST look flawless first! Even those with acnaic skin can also have a flawless look.  It all depends on how much you actually know about your skin first and foremost!

    Ask yourself the following questions;

    1) What is my skin type (Dry, Combination, or Oily)?

Often times, I ask my clients this question and they all say their skin type is oily.  WRONG! We may feel as though we have oily skin due to minimal oil buildup on the nose, however that may not be the case. If you feel that you have "oily" skin, (and you actually don't), you'll do anything to prevent oil buildup. Even over cleansing your skin can cause it to freak out and produce more oil than needed, because the natural oils in

your skin have constantly been stripped away. Tip: Do not over cleanse your skin!! Our natural oils are extremely beneficial and essential in the long run; especially to women of color!

    2) Am I allergic to any skincare or makeup products?

Discovering any allergic reactions that you may have had from using certain items is extremely important. What works for my skin may not work for yours and vice versa. Continuing to use items that you may be allergic to could cause major issues in the long run. The first thing I highly recommend is viewing the ingredients list of every item put on your skin, for your sake!

    3) Do I moisturize regularly?

This step is extremely important! Moisturizing twice a day helps to improve the elasticity of the skin. After all, we'd like to appear as youthful as possible in our "Golden Years," Right?!!

    4) What products have I used in the past that gave me great results?

This is simple...what works best for you?! For me, I have to use oil free products as well as products that include a decent percentage of salicylic acid. Brands such as Neutrogena and Paula's Choice have given me great results, and pretty much cater to all skin types! I highly recommend reading up on brands and getting as much knowledge about them as possible.

    5) Do I thoroughly cleanse my skin twice a day?

I personally love a good sudsy, soapy cleanser. My skin feels the most clean when using items like this.

    6) Do I exfoliate often?

When I say often, I mean every 1 to 2 weeks! Over exfoliating could be detrimental to the skin. Some consider exfoliating to be on a similar scale to a chemical peel, just not nearly as abrasive! I love to exfoliate every now and then, I just wouldn't recommend over doing it!

    7) Do I have a particular day of the week solely dedicated to skincare?

Set a day of the week as your "relaxation day" and use this day to pamper yourself! For me, my Sunday's are titled "Skincare Sunday" where I dedicate most of the evening to prepping my skin for the week! After thoroughly cleansing my skin with my "Neutrogena Grapefruit Face Wash", I then apply my "Fresh Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask" that I leave on for about 30 minutes. I then focus on my under eye area by applying my "Patchology Eye Gels" to focus on deep hydrating my under eye area. I leave them on for close to an hour. Afterwards, I then moisturize my skin using my "Philosophy Renewed Hope in A Jar Refreshing & Refining Moisturizer"! And that is my Sunday evening skincare regiment!!

Armani- Their Designer Fabric foundations can be purchased at Sephora stores, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus stores and online at GiorgioArmaniBeauty-USA.com.

Lancôme- Their Teint Idole foundations can be purchased at select department stores such as Macy's, Dillard's, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus.

Estée Lauder- Their Double Wear liquid or powder foundations can be purchased at select department stores such as Macy's, Dillard's, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus.

Hourglass- Their Vanish Foundation Sticks can be purchased at select Sephora stores, Nordstrom stores, and online at Hourglass.com.

When searching for the perfect Foundation shade, I highly recommend going into one of the aforementioned stores and getting a complementary color match. This will ensure that you are selecting the correct shade for yourself as well as put your mind at ease about your purchase.  For my "natural makeup" wearers, I highly recommend just purchasing a concealer and light weight powder to complement. When it comes down to concealers, I always recommend going 1 or 2 shades lighter to highlight your "T-zone" area (which is under your eyes and down the middle of your face.

There are many things we do to make certain that our makeup lasts throughout the day. I cannot stress enough the importance of a skincare regime.  Especially when it comes down to making certain that your makeup is flawless!

    Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize!!!!

Moisturizing your skin will forever be the key to having amazing skin! I always recommend getting into this habit as early as possible.  Especially if you'd like to age gracefully & beautifully!

    Prime-Time!

Using a silicone-free primer is also recommended.  Silicone primers tend to be exceptionally heavy for the skin and not the greatest thing for your pores, unless you have large pores.  A primer is used to keep makeup from seeping deep down into your pores, and it creates a "barrier" for the skin!  I recommend using a primer with high SPF.  When shopping for one, look for one that will not cause a "white-cast" when taking a picture.   You definitely wouldn't want that "ghostly look" you get when the camera flash goes off.  I highly recommend going to a beauty store such as Ulta Beauty or Sephora and playing around with different primers to see exactly what works best for you!

    Ready...Get Set!!

Setting sprays will also be your new "BFF.”  Especially in this Texas heat!!  Setting your makeup look with a cool, refreshing setting spray is the icing on the cake! I highly recommend holding the spray bottle at least 8-10 inches away from your face and spraying yourself down, covering all areas (forehead, cheeks, t-zone, chin, and neck). Setting sprays such as Mac Cosmetics Fix Plus, Urban Decay's All Nighter or De-Slick for oily skin, or Super Goop's Mattifying Setting Spray are all setting sprays that I have used and I am very confident in saying how well they work!

So ladies, even though summer 17 is rapidly coming to a close, these items can most definitely be used year round! Try them out and feel free to let me know what you think at AtxGlamQueens@gmail.com.  Please add "Makeup Questions" in the subject line and I will get back with you as soon as I can!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read, and please feel free to share!!
